Introducing Muses & Rebels of Venice Beach
After a successful career in fashion design, owner and designer Natasha Landenberger decided to take a break and travel to Japan for some soul-searching and inspiration. There in Osaka she became completely immersed in jewelry, taking tips and inspiration from the locals. Upon returning to the states she opened a jewelry business called Muses & Rebels. Today Natasha, working out of her studio in Venice Beach, sells her jewelry to stores across the globe.
Tell us a little about your background and how you got into jewelry.
I graduated from Otis College of Art & Design with a BFA in Fashion Design. I worked in the fashion industry as a designer and director at Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle Outfitters and Pink for Victoria's Secret. After seven years of working for corporate contemporary fashion brands, I took some time off and did some soul searching. Looking to be inspired to design again, I ended up traveling with some of my best friends and my mom. On of the trips was one month in Japan with a best friend and her family. The two of us spent many hours making jewelry together and I was inspired by her and my travels to make beaded necklaces and chain bracelets hand wrapped in ombre thread. This was the beginning of my jewelry line Muses & Rebels.
What is most important to you when you set out to create a new product?
I need to be excited by the idea and ultimately want to wear it myself or would buy it for someone else to wear.
What do you love to wear and where do you look for inspiration?
I love to mix vintage or second hand clothing items with current trends. I am inspired by pieces I've collected over the years during my travels. I don't get to travel as much now, so I also draw inspiration from images / photography. I still tear pages out of magazines and save for use later. Tumblr and Pinterest are also great sources for mood and color images.
What do you love about living and working in Venice, CA?
It's always been important for me to live near the ocean because it keeps me sane and happy. I'm not entirely a beach girl, I like the energy of a metropolis, so it's vital for me to have a bit of both lifestyles. I grew up in Santa Monica and lived in Manhattan for 5 years. Venice is a perfect combination of beach and city lifestyle.
If you could do any other occupation, what would it be?
This is a tough question. I truly love what I do and feel so grateful to be able to create, design and grow my own brand. I've also always enjoyed drawing (specifically fashion illustrations), so I'd be happy as a fashion illustrator or even teaching fashion illustration to college students.
What is your favorite artist in any field, living or dead?
Herakut (Hera + Akut) an artistic duo from Germany. Beautiful and slightly haunting work.
What is next?
Since the birth of my daughter, I have a new interest in baby and children's clothing. I recently launched a very small capsule collection of baby onesies for Muses & Rebels and I'm excited to make new pieces to expand the collection.
